Do we bring our own bikes or are they hired in France?

You will bring your own bike on this trip. We load them onto trailers and then the trailers are taken with the vehicles onto the ferry. Where you will collect the bike just around the corner from the port on Saturday.

Can parents come along?

Absolutely, but we only have a certain number of adult spaces available on the trip.

Additionally, any adult (regardless of Scouting role) attending must have a valid DBS, Safety and Safeguarding training.

Do you have any recommended routes

Yes, we do, and it will be something that will be distributed to your group leader in the build-up to the trip.

However, the great thing about the trip is that you don't have to follow a route if you don't want to. There are boundaries that we would like you to stay within but it's free riding inside of those.

Do I need travel insurance?

As with all Scouting trips abroad travel insurance is required and is covered in the cost of the trip.

If you wish to purchase additional travel insurance you can, or if you already have some then that can be used if needed.

What type of accommodation do we use?

On the way out, we will be on the overnight ferry with cabins. These will be organised by gender, age and scout groups, so that where possible friends are together.

In France, we will be staying on a campsite under canvas. You will need to bring your own tents, or organise that with you group leaders

Cycling groups/teams

When cycling you will be in teams of 4-7 people. The teams are down to you and your group leader.

We do recommend that the team size isn't larger than 7 as it becomes very difficult to manage a team that's larger. It also starts to annoy the locals as they have to pull out round large pelotons of cyclists.

Where are we staying?

We stay at a municipal campsite in Bayeux called - Camping Municipal des Bords de l'Aure de Bayeux. It's a public campsite, but we have worked with them to get a nice space for us to pitch our tents etc.

The facilities on the site are very good quality, and the bonus is that there is a swimming pool for a swim after a long day in the saddle. We are also a stones throw away from the centre of Bayeux, so ideal for an evening walk around.
